WHAT IS OROFACIAL MYOLOGY?

Orofacial Myology (also known as Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy) is a form of therapy that aims to normalise the function of the muscles of the mouth including those of the tongue, lips, jaw, face and neck.

The therapy is for patients who have developed what is known as an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD). This is where a patient has developed altered patterns of muscle recruitment for tasks involving the mouth.

PREGNANCY
Why is it that people still have Osteopathic treatment when they are pregnant?

Osteopathic treatment is gentle and carefully works with the body; this makes it safe and effective throughout the complete cycle of pregnancy.

When baby gets bigger, of course more weight is carried in the front. This puts increasing strain on the lower back, mid/upper back, the neck and shoulders.

Osteopaths treat the body as a whole; we assess and treat the key junction areas of the lower back, mid/low back, base of the neck and base of the skull.

Lower back pain is very common in pregnancy. As the hormone Relaxin is working to soften the pelvic ligaments, this potentially adds to the imbalance and can leave the lower back vulnerable, particularly the sacroiliac joints. Osteopathy can help gently re-establish the balance.

Cranial Osteopathy and Pregnancy
For some pregnant patients Cranial Osteopathy can be very helpful to gently treat restrictions at the base of the skull and base of the spine.

In the modern world with the prevalence of phones, tablets, laptops, time at the desk, as well as stress and busy lifestyles, neck pain has become more and more common.

The neck has many muscles and tissues from the shoulders, mid/upper back and upper ribs that attach to it, so any tension from below can work its way up to the neck.

The body also tries its best to keep the eyes even. It surprises many that no one has a perfectly straight spine, everyone curves a little to the left and right, but most of the time the curves remain in balance.

The lower back is the most common area in the body for people to experience pain. It has been estimated that up to 80% of individuals will experience at least an episode in their lifetime.

In the modern world, usage of phones, tablets, laptops and time at the desk has added another very common back pain - upper back pain. Commonly felt ‘behind the shoulder blade’, the upper ribs are a common cause of pain and have strong connections to both the neck and shoulder. Osteopathy is a system of manual medicine develope

Osteopathy is a system of manual medicine developed in the late 1800’s by Dr Andrew Taylor Still. Dr Still was a Medical Doctor and Surgeon in the United States, who became disenchanted with the practice of medicine, particularly after the tragic passing of his three children from infections. He felt this was a result of the inadequate medical care of the time.

He decided to move away from the harsh medicines used in his profession and devoted many years to studying the human body. He developed a system that focused on the body’s innate ability to heal itself and the influence that the physical structure of the body had on these healing abilities.

He called this system ‘Osteopathy’ and launched his new treatment modality in 1874.
